Welcome to the King Elementary School Web Page. Our Principal is Martha Ragar. Our school population is approximately 285 students. We are located in Van Buren, Arkansas. King Elementary School is designated as the site of the Gifted and Talented Program for the Van Buren School District. We are a GREAT EXPECTATIONS and a CORE KNOWLEDGE School.

We have three kindergarten classes, two first grades, three second grade, three third grades, and three fourth grade classes. Our curriculum offers a 30 station Josten's computer lab accessed by students K-4, Special Education Inclusion K-4, Music class, Chess class, Physical Education class, ESL class, and Speech class. Cindy Dennehy offers counseling classes weekly, she also holds a gold card drawing weekly, and sponsors the BUG club. Her office is always open to meet students needs. Mrs. Louise Flenor is our Library Media Specialist and has twice weekly library classes. Students, have access to a 12 station multi-media lab in the media center, both internet and e-mail access are available. The library is also equipped with a flatbed scanner, a digital camera, and much more. Our teachers were given an opportunity to choose from over one hundred computer courses over the summer to enhance their computer skills. Other special programs include Word Masters, Ambassadors, Great Books, Honor Choir, Mentoring by Society of Automotive Engineers, Take Home Computer Program, Word of the Week, and Quarterly Award Assemblies. Other special programs include Shurley English, Berkley Science, and a Title I School wide Program. Televisions,VCR's and Cable are available in each classroom.

School supplies are provided for every student throughout the year.

The Gifted and Talented Program serves Identified students in Grades 2-12. Students in grades K-1 receive enrichment. Gifted students are defined as "those in need of a qualitatively differentiated educational experience, due to demonstrated ability or potential. "Approximately five percent of the student population of the Van Buren School District meets the criteria for service under one or more of the following areas: above average intellectual ability, task commitment and /or movitation, and creative ability. The Great Expectations Teaching Model is an eclectic approach to teaching that encompasses the very best of what is known about teaching today. Through an integrated and holistic curriculum, students become self-directed learners, productive citizens, effective communicators, critical thinkers and cooperative contributors to the classroom as well as society.

Core Knowledge represents an attempt to state specifically a core of shared knowledge that children should learn. The K-4 sequence used at King school contains traditional subjects and skills but aligns them in a comprehensive plan that builds year by year. The teachers at King are dedicated to teaching solid academic content and skills to all children.

Parents are involved in Kindergarten Readiness Workshop, Title I Committees, Parent Teachers Association, Room Parent, Awards Assemblies, Parent Center, Grandparents Day, Gifted and Talented Sharefest, Family Read Along Night, and Field Trips.

Our Community and Business Partners include Mercantile Bank, Baldor Electric, Crawford County Art Center, Vision 2010, Pizza Hut Book It, Braum's Reading Buddies, Crawford County Compassionate Minstries, Wal-Mart Foundation, St Jude's Hospital, and the Women's League of Van Buren.
